A Guide to Motorhomes and Touring Caravans
12th January 2016
If you are new to caravan holidays and need a few pointers, you’ve come to the right place. Read our beginner’s guide to motorhomes and touring caravans that will teach you the basics before you set out on your way to Moss Wood Caravan Park in Lancashire.
Touring essentials
The first thing to think about is what other practical accessories would make your journey and stay as simple as possible. Items like towing mirrors and electrical hook-up cables are essential, whereas chocks, pads or ramps will help keep any caravan or motorhome stable and level for the duration of your stay.
Practice makes perfect
Get the feel of your new purchase by hooking up your tourer or taking your motorhome for a drive, so there aren’t any unwelcome surprises when you come to setting out. In addition, plan your journey by factoring in the best route and use a GPS if you haven’t been to the destination before.
Supply your own utilities
You may also want to familiarise yourself with the practical utilities included within you caravan or motor home. If you have a gas hob, refill or install a new gas canister before you set out. For water and waste, associate yourself with how they work in terms of removal and aim to use the toilet as little as possible, especially if there are toilet facilities at the touring site.
Maximise your space
Assess the storage capabilities of your caravan or motorhome before you set out. You may find small cubby holes that will fit foldable furniture and spaces to store loose items such as pots and pans. For softer items such as duvets or pillows, think about storing them in the shower cubicle or bathroom area if you have one, just to save on space elsewhere.
Seasonal access
If its the height of summer when you’re taking out your caravan or motorhome, you mind want to think about thermal blinds and insect repellent. If you’re braving the colder weather however, you might want to consider packing some portable heaters and gloves!
Think of your passengers
For kids, make sure you have plenty of entertainment on the journey such as books, DVD players and tablets. For pets on the other hand, take bottled water for the journey and make sure they can go for a quick walk when you stop for a break.
