Our Top Tips for Caravanning with Children
25th July 2022
With the summer holidays now in full swing, it’s time to get prepared for your long-awaited caravan holiday. Spending quality time together away from the stresses and strains of a busy home life, is one of life’s great pleasures and an excellent way to decompress at the end of the school year.
We understand that holidaying with little ones can be challenging and there’s more to consider (and pack!) then travelling pre-kids. So, we’ve compiled a list of our top tips for caravanning with children to help you prepare ahead of your trip. We share helpful hacks, packing advice and ways to keep younger members of the family entertained!
Choose a family friendly park
According to the age-old adage, ‘if you fail to plan you plan to fail’ and we couldn’t agree more! It essential to thoroughly research caravan sites before booking, to make sure it has everything you and your family need. Do you want a kids club, a pool and on-site entertainment, or would you prefer something a quieter? Deciding what facilities your kids will like ahead of time will help manage expectations and avoid disappointment once you arrive.
Sometimes parks are able to accommodate pitch requests, so enquire whether you can be sited close to the play park or another facility that you plan on using regularly.
Get children involved in the planning process to help build excitement. Show them pictures of the area and the attractions you plan on visiting whilst you’re there. Why not give them a couple of options and let them choose a day out for the family to enjoy during you’re a getaway! They’ll feel like they’ve play a very important role!
Pack a dedicated holiday toy box
If you’re travelling regularly, consider giving each member of the family a stack and store of essentials that can be left in the caravan at all times. This means you can leave at short notice and won’t have to run round packing everything last minute.
We recommend creating a box of toys that are only used whilst on holiday. This means they’ll feel new to little ones and will keep them engaged for hours on end. These can be rotated every couple of months to keep them fresh and interesting. We think board games and cards are a must on holiday!
Make sure toys are stored somewhere nice and accessible, so you can get them out when you arrive. Have frisbees, swing ball, books, puzzles, scooters and colouring books at the ready for kids to play with whilst you set up camp.
Get the kids involved
Caravan holidays are a great place for kids to learn new skills and independence. During your holiday give children dedicated jobs to do so that they feel involved with the set up and take down process. Whether it’s helping with washing up, fetching water, preparing snacks or taking the rubbish to the bins there’s plenty for them to do.
Create a holiday scrapbook
Packing craft supplies is a great idea if you’ve got the space. We suggest bringing scrapbook supplies so kids can document their holiday in the evenings or wet weather days. Bring an empty notebook, pens and stickers and stick in post cards and tickets from places you visit during your break. Not only will this keep little ones occupied but give them something to remember their visit as they grow up. They can also show it to friends and family to once they get home!
Invest in an awning
We highly recommend purchasing an awning if possible. The added space will give you room to spread out and somewhere for the children to play if it rains. You’ll have somewhere to store bikes, scooters and muddy shoes. Having an awning will also give you somewhere to relax in the evening without fear of disturbing the kids whilst they sleep.
