With over 1,000 years of history, Lancaster Castle has been the site of many important historical events – originally a Roman fortress, the castle was also a prison until 2011, making it the longest running prison in Europe. Kids will love exploring the courtrooms and trying out the medieval cells for size, while learning about the darker side of Britain’s penal history, from the infamous Lancaster Witch Trials to transportation.

Just a short drive from Moss Wood, you’ll find Williamson Park – 54 acres of gorgeous parkland, with spectacular views overlooking Morecambe Bay, the Fylde Coast and the Lake District. It’s home to woodland walks, hidden trails, mosaics and follies, a children’s playground, and even a Mini Beast Cave and Edwardian Butterfly House. In the holidays, the park also hosts regular children’s activities and events, so be sure to check out it’s what’s on at Williamson Park guide before going.

In the summer, Lancaster Canal Boats run a daily boat trip to the Lune Aqueduct – a masterpiece of engineering that’s often referred to as one of England’s greatest ‘wonders of the waterways’. The trip is incredibly child-friendly – all kids receive a free activity pack to keep them entertained at the start, and an ‘I sailed the Lune Aqueduct’ souvenir certificate at the end – and takes you through some spots of outstanding natural beauty and historical importance.

Explore the Forest of Bowland

A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Forest of Bowland is often described as the ‘Switzerland of England’ thanks to its otherworldly landscapes of fells, valleys and moorland. There are plenty of shorter and pushchair-accessible walking routes in Forest of Bowland ideal for families, not to mention the Pendle Sculpture Trail – a walk through the woods that is lined with sculptures that tell the tale of the Pendle Witches.

All Aboard the Fellsman Steam Train

Children love the novelty of a stream train, so the iconic Fellsman Steam Train between Lancaster and Carlisle shouldn’t be missed. Following the historic Settle to Carlisle Railway line, the journey takes you on a perilously steep journey through the Yorkshire Dales and Eden Valley, passing over the majestic Ribblehead Viaduct – all in a steam-hauled Victorian locomotive. There’s also the option of stopping off for a lake cruise at Ullswater on the way back.

See the Sea at Blackpool

Blackpool has something for everyone, come rain or shine. Daredevils will love the rollercoasters at the Pleasure Beach, while younger children will be happy strolling the shores of Blackpool Beach before having fish and chips on the pier. The Blackpool Tower is also not short of attractions, including the Eye, Circus, Ballroom, Dungeon and Jungle Jim’s indoor play area. And, of course, there’s also the zoo, aquarium, Madame Tussauds and Sandcastle Water Park – the UK’s largest indoor water park.

As you can see, there’s certainly no shortage of fun activities to keep the whole family entertained on your Moss Wood holiday.

Are there any great activities you’ve tried in the area that we haven’t mentioned? Check out our Facebook page and let us know what else you’ve been up to whilst on holiday at Moss Wood.
