Moss Wood Reaches Finals of Lancashire Tourism Awards 2023

There was a real buzz of excitement at Moss Wood when we learned that our work to protect and encourage wildlife had helped us reach the finals of the Lancashire Tourism Awards 2023.

Moss Wood Caravan Park in Cockerham, near Lancaster, was named a finalist in the Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism category, recognising our ongoing efforts to protect the natural environment and encourage guests to discover the wildlife around the park.

As part of the final stages of the awards, Moss Wood faced a mystery shop from an industry professional followed by a face-to-face interview with the judging panel.

Lancashire Tourism Awards 2023 Finalists

The Lancashire Tourism Awards celebrate the achievements of tourism and hospitality businesses from across the county, with the winners announced at an awards ceremony in Blackburn.

As part of the judging process, our environmental policies and approach to sustainable tourism were put under close scrutiny.

One area that caught the judges’ attention was our work to provide habitats and food sources for some of the smallest residents at Moss Wood.

Honey Bees and Our Wildflower Meadow

Moss Wood is home to around 80,000 honey bees, housed in traditional timber hives within the park grounds.

The bees benefit from the many nectar-rich plants found around the park, including our 3,000 sq ft wildflower meadow, which provides an important food source for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

We also have plans to harvest honey from the hives for sale in our park shop.

Our work goes beyond providing habitats for wildlife. We encourage holiday guests and members of the local community, especially children, to get closer to nature, learn more about the wildlife around them and understand the importance of protecting it.

Getting Back to Nature at Moss Wood

Guests can explore our 1.5km nature discovery trail, while two spring-fed lakes provide habitats for birdlife, dragonflies, waterfowl and a wide variety of aquatic species.

Henry Wild, whose family has owned Moss Wood for more than 50 years, said everyone at the park was delighted to have reached the finals:

“Their knowledge and skills mean we are never short of new ideas for safeguarding wildlife and for helping youngsters to enjoy making new outdoor discoveries.

“Our family feels very privileged to live and work in this beautiful part of rural Lancashire, and I hope this nomination will help raise awareness of its very special qualities.”

We were incredibly proud to see our work recognised by the Lancashire Tourism Awards and to have the opportunity to showcase some of the wildlife and natural habitats that make Moss Wood such a special place.
