Things to do in Knott End-on Sea
Scenic walks and shopping in Knott End
Knott End is a small village situated on the shores of the River Wyre at the Southern end of Morecambe Bay. It is the largest village in an area known locally as ‘Over Wyre’ and is accessible via road or ferry from Fleetwood.
Many people choose to spend a couple of hours here during their holiday in Lancashire. The pretty coastal village has an attractive seafront, with a promenade overlooking the beach and salt marshes. On a clear day you can even see The Lakes in the distance. Knott End is the closest sandy beach to Moss Wood Caravan Park.
Things to Do in Knott End
1. Scenic Walks
Knott End-on Sea is a popular destination for bird watchers – it’s also a great spot for a leisurely afternoon walk. One of the most popular walks starts and ends at the The Bourne Arms Pub. The 5-mile circular route showcases the best of the River Wyre and incorporates a small section of the Wyre Way.
2. ‘Meet’ Lowry on the Prom
The renowned artist LS Lowry was a regular visitor to Knott End in the 40’s and 50’s. He is said to have loved the area and drawn inspiration from his time spent on the Lancashire coast. In fact, Knott End features in many of his paintings, including ‘The Jetty at Knott End’. Today there is a statue in his honour located near the Ferry Slipway.
3. Hop on the Fleetwood Ferry
A handy and fun way to cross the Wyre. When operating, salings are typical around :15 and :45 from Fleetwood (a few minutes later from Knott End). Services are weather/tide dependent
4. Knott End Golf Club
An 18-hole course with front-nine fairways overlooking the Wyre estuary – a scenic round just outside the village.
5. Stroll Along the Promenade
Follow the raised sea wall for wide estuary panoramas and saltmarsh birdlife. Some coastal embankment sections towards Pilling have seasonal access restrictions to protect wildlife.
6. Shopping
After admiring the views, you can take a look in the independent shops, where you’ll find a variety of homeware and gifts.
If you’re feeling peckish there are a number of food retailers where you can buy supplies for a picnic. Knott End Café serves a selection of light bites and family favourites. Fish and chips and home-made ice cream can also be purchased from the seafront.
Nature & Wildlife
The estuary and saltmarsh host waders and wintering geese – bring bincoluars and check tides for the best activity.
